Ashton Potter of IOW Electrical in a branded jacket, holding a tablet on an Isle of Wight street

Meet Ashton

Ashton Potter runs IOW Electrical

Ashton is a fifth generation Islander, well known in the local community. He runs IOW Electrical day to day and checks every estimate over £1,000 including VAT before you see it.

The answers below cover what people ask us most. If your question is not here, contact us and we will answer it.

Getting a price

How do I get a price?

Tap Get my price, answer a few questions about your property and the job, and add photos. For most jobs your estimate arrives in minutes. Any estimate over £1,000 including VAT is checked by Ashton before you see it.

What does my estimate include?

Your estimate itemises the labour, the materials, the certification and any waste removal, so you can see how the total is made up before you accept it. It also lists what it assumes and what is not included.

Is my estimate the final price?

Your price is an estimate built from your answers and photos. Your IOW Electrical electrician checks every job before it is confirmed. If anything differs from your description, you get a revised price before any work starts, and if you decide not to go ahead we refund your deposit in full.

Why do you need photos?

Clear photos mean a more accurate price first time, without a visit. Only photograph what you are comfortable with, and never unscrew the cover of your fuse box.

Can a person check my estimate?

Yes. You can ask for a person to check your estimate at any time.

How long is my estimate valid?

30 days from the date it is issued.

Booking and paying

How much is the deposit, and when do I pay the rest?

You pay a deposit of 25% of your estimate, including VAT, when you book. The balance is due when the job is complete.

Is my deposit refundable?

If we change your price and you decide not to go ahead, we refund your deposit in full.

Can I cancel after I have booked?

Yes. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from accepting to cancel. If you ask us to start within those 14 days and then cancel after work has begun, you pay only for the work done up to that point.

On the day

Who will do the work?

Your IOW Electrical electrician: a vetted, NICEIC registered local electrician. Once your job is confirmed you will see who is coming before the day.

Could I be charged for extra work on the day?

Not without your approval. If your electrician finds something that changes the job, they price it and send it to you to approve before doing any extra work.

Will you redecorate?

Holes and chases are filled and made good, but not redecorated.

Certificates and guarantee

What certificate will I get?

The one that matches the work: an Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits, consumer units and rewires, a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for smaller alterations, or an Electrical Installation Condition Report for an inspection.

What is Part P?

Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety in homes. New circuits, consumer unit replacements and work in the zones around a bath or shower are notifiable. We register the work through the NICEIC scheme and the property owner receives a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

What guarantee do I get?

Every job carries a 2 year workmanship guarantee.

Landlords and areas

How often does a rented property need an EICR?

At least every five years, or sooner if the last report says so.

Do you charge for travel?

No. There is no travel charge anywhere on the Island, from PO30 to PO41. The only exception is a private car park charge at the property, which is passed on at cost.

Do you work on the mainland?

Not at the moment. We only work on the Isle of Wight.
