- 2 year workmanship guarantee
- Revised price before any work starts
What it is
A consumer unit, often called the fuse box, is where your electricity supply is split into separate circuits for sockets, lights, cooker and so on.
A modern unit carries RCD protection, which cuts the power very quickly if current leaks to earth, and circuit breakers that you reset with a switch instead of replacing fuse wire.

When you need it
- Your board still has rewirable fuses
- There is no RCD protection, or only some circuits are covered
- A switch in the fuse box keeps tripping
- An electrical safety report (EICR) has recommended an upgrade
- You are adding a circuit, such as an EV charger or electric shower, and the board has no room
- You are rewiring or renovating
What our standard job covers
Your estimate spells out exactly what your job includes, so you can check it before you accept.
- Removing the old board and fitting a new consumer unit in the same place
- Reconnecting your existing circuits and labelling each one
- Testing every circuit
- An Electrical Installation Certificate
- Part P notification, with the Building Regulations compliance certificate sent to the property owner
- Taking the old board away
What can change the price
Your estimate itemises the labour, the materials, the certification and any waste removal, so you can see how the total is made up before you accept it. These are the things that most often affect it:
- Faults found when your existing circuits are tested, which must be put right before a new board can be certified
- Earthing or bonding that needs bringing up to standard
- Moving the board to a new position
- Extra circuits added at the same time
- An older board with asbestos flash guards, which needs careful removal
- A problem with the main fuse or incoming supply, which SSEN deals with
Your certificate
You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is registered through the NICEIC scheme and the property owner receives a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Government guidance says this should arrive within 30 days of completion.
Can it be priced online?
Usually, yes. Photos of the whole board with its cover closed, the board with the front flap open showing the switches, your electricity meter and the main cable coming in are normally enough. Never unscrew the cover of your fuse box to take a photo.
No surprises
If anything differs from your description, you get a revised price before any work starts, and if you decide not to go ahead we refund your deposit in full.

Consumer unit upgrades: questions
Will my power be off?
Yes, while the board is changed. Your estimate shows how long the job is expected to take, so you can plan around it.
What happens if testing finds a fault on an existing circuit?
Your electrician explains what they have found and prices the fix. Nothing extra is done without your approval.
Do I have to replace a working older board?
There is no general rule that a working older board must be replaced. An EICR may recommend an upgrade, and landlords must act on what the report requires.
Can you move the consumer unit?
Often, yes. Tell us where you would like it in the questions and the extra work is included in your estimate.
